Subtonomy has been a proud partner of Tekniksprånget, providing engineering internship opportunities for young minds for over 4 years. Now we open up for new applications starting in fall 2025.

In August 2024, we welcomed Majken who successfully completed her internship in our DevOps department, and enjoyed her time with us so much, she decided to continue working with us before starting her studies. Here’s her “why”:

What did your usual day look like?

In the morning, we started off with a stand-up meeting where everyone shared updates on their work and any challenges they were facing.

Then I would get on with a previously assigned task. These ranged from fixing a small bug to designing a completely new tab. I was mostly working on the UI, user interface, but also further back in the application.

At Subtonomy you get to work with a lot of different programming languages; Java Script (Polymer and React), PHP, CSS, HTML and more. It was an incredible learning experience, especially since I prefer “learning by doing”.

For some tasks, I was collaborating with my fellow Tekniksprånget colleague, which added an extra layer of collaboration when planning and dividing responsibilities.

The team works in three-week sprints, so every few weeks, there would be meetings about how the last sprint went, demos of new functionality and knowledge sharing. This kept every day interesting and you got to feel engaged in the team.

Was there a specific project/challenge you enjoyed working on?

One of the tasks I particularly enjoyed was creating a new menu for map tabs across all our applications. The existing map buttons were too clustered and needed rethinking, so I brainstormed solutions, presented my ideas to the team, gathered feedback, and then worked on it some more. The task stood out because it was so open-ended, giving me room to be creative. It was a great learning experience in both project management and the creative design process, and I appreciated being trusted to run the project from start to finish.

What was your favourite part about working at Subtonomy?

One of the best parts of being an intern at Subtonomy is the impact you get to make. The work I did went directly to customers, which was incredibly rewarding

Beyond the work itself, It has been great working at such a welcoming company. From being invited to the summer kick-off and Christmas dinner to various team activities, the company made me feel like a valued member of the group. Everyone has been approachable and eager to help whenever I needed guidance.

What will you be taking away from your engineering internship?

One thing I’m taking away from this experience is the invaluable insight into working as part of a development team. It has given me the hands-on experience with the Scrum methodology, from participating in stand-ups to contributing during retrospectives hard to gain through studying or personal projects alone. It’s a way of working that I’m likely to encounter in the future, and I feel more prepared to navigate it thanks to this internship.

Interning at Subtonomy has also significantly boosted my confidence! I was often assigned tasks which initially seemed daunting and impossible, but by taking things one step at a time and really diving into the issue, I was able to find solutions. It’s a skill I’m proud to have developed, and it’s one I’ll carry forward.

"If you’re considering an internship at Subtonomy, I highly recommend it. It’s an amazing opportunity to learn and grow in a great environment. I’m very happy that I will get to continue my work here next year."

A little bit about the Tekniksprånget initiative: It is a nation-wide internship program through which graduates of natural sciences or technical highschools get to try the life of an engineer. For 4 months they join a company within the field of their interest and join the internal teams with varying degrees of responsibility. The project is run by the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) and over 220 companies across Sweden currently participate.
